After multiple initial setbacks of his starter albums, Jimmy Buffet set on to try something different that would touch people’s hearts and make them dance from inside. Tis This Season and Christmas Island are among the albums that contain music with Christmas and holidays songs. Both the albums got big hits in their release times and people totally adored them. Christmas Island was his first Christmas album and he aimed to change the label of Christmas being celebrated in snowy weather. He believed that Christmas is a symbol of love, joy and togetherness and it should not be confined to celebrations only in the month of winters or the Christmas itself. It should be celebrated throughout the year, anytime and at any place. He expressed that one doesn’t have to wait for winters to celebrate joy and companionship, it can be done at any time of the year. This eccentricity and different view about Christmas grabbed lot of attention, turned many heads and people listened to this album. Moreover, this album was favorite among sailors who usually spend their Christmas away from home because the songs gave them a feeling of home, family and joy. It touched many hearts and the album became the songs of the streets, homes and vacations.
About the album, “Christmas Island”
As mentioned before, Buffet really enjoyed making Christmas music and Christmas Island is his First Christmas album, but twenty-first studio album overall. It contains the famous Christmas songs in buffet’s styling. This album was released on October 8, 1996 and has the genre, Rock, Gulf and Western and Christmas. It was released with Margaritaville Records (MCA). This album largely consists of original Christmas songs, and this album is truly dedicated to parrotheads. Christmas Island is a kind of album that is relaxing yet entertaining. The songs of this album makes listeners to spend Christmas on a topical island where there is no snow and the weather is cozy. The songs force a person to spend Christmas holidays on a sandy beach while enjoying a cold drink with the cold breeze. Santa’s ride is described as a canoe but not the sled and makes anyone enjoy the Christmas mood anywhere. Buffet’s styling is a pure Hawaiian and tropical one. In his views, Christmas is not meant to be celebrated in a snowy environment rather it can be celebrated in more blissful manner near the beach in any tropical island. He attempted to change people’s thoughts about Christmas celebration by releasing this album. For all the beach lovers, this is the perfect album to hear.
Reviews about the album are mixed. Obviously where there is positive, there is negative as well. In one of the positive reviews, a reviewer stated that, this album will have you on your feet all time along through the Christmas holidays. Rob O’Conner says that this is not a typical Christmas fare of enjoying roasted chestnuts near the fire, but it is for the beach lovers who enjoy wasting their time near the cool beach breezes. More positive reviews about the album are similar, who doesn’t love a perfect Christmas holiday on beach enjoying a drink with the loved ones and watching the sunset in heavenly place? Of course everyone wants to experience it but there are some labels to Christmas celebrations. A perfect snowy day and Christmas trees. Why can’t a Christmas tree be exchanged to a coconut tree near the beach? Thom Owen depicts a negative view of this album, saying that Buffett is a relaxed and entertaining even though some of his songs and its rearrangements are rather forced. There were no singles in the album which made some critique. However, there some tracks from the album which remained popular around the Christmas season. “Ho Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum” was the song which was chosen to be performed live for the promotion of the album and it was the most popular track among people. Many radio stations played the songs from this album, the reason they got famous.
